iPhone, after some thought
A few observations about the iPhone:
1. It runs OS X. I look forward to following the iPhone track at WWDC 2007. I'm not sure I totally believe that it runs a 'pure' version of Mac OS X. I mean, does it have the Cocoa APIs available? Come to think of it, will it have any API for third parties? If Apple wants to build an ecosystem then the answer will surely be yes (and, just to show what a geek I am, I instinctively typed that as "YES").
2. It's released in the summer. I look forward to getting one as a free gift after the WWDC keynote. Ahem.
3. It is rather pricey when you figure that it requires a two-year contract with Cingular. Two-year contracts are unheard of in this country (18 month deals have been here for a bit). I've always shied away from deals longer than 12 months, because I've never been convinced that any cellphone will actually function correctly after 18 months of use.
4. UK launch in Q4'07. Booo! Hiss! I just hope that's really Q4 and not the same "later this year" in which we were promised iPhoto book printing or the iTunes Store.
5. I guess I'm spending the next year with a Nokia E61, trying not to think about the iPhone.
