Working, playing

Wow. Work is super-ultra-mega busy right now. I'm trying to get a load of stuff done before I leave for Athens on Sunday (and will probably end up doing more stuff remotely when I'm over there).

Nice to see that the fruits of several friends' labours has been announced as ready-to-go. I'm personally looking forward to Spotlight and Core Image the most. It's funny. At WWDC last year, I was like "Oh, Core Image. ummmkay..whatever. OMG!! Spotlight!". Now I have FlickrExport to toy with, I'm starting to appreciate the depth that there is in CI. Cool stuff. I doubt I will ever get around to learning enough Javascript and art-skills to produce a Dashboard widget.

I've been doing a bit of programming with Spotlight on my Tiger install and it's quite a remarkable technology. It's been a while since the ease of producing impressive results made me laugh out loud with delight, but Spotlight is that kind of thing. Core Data is similar. Cocoa Bindings was that kind of technology in the Panther era, as Interface Builder was in earlier days. What delights me the most, though, is that the usability ethos that's always been part of the Mac UI also extends to the developer-level stuff, even to the API design.

This is an exciting time to be a Mac developer.
