iWeb
So, the real question is whether I've become quite lazy enough to actually use iWeb for my home page? Almost, but not quite.

iWeb looks like the Pages layout engine tweaked to emit HTML, with a few extras added. All the themes have the same basic six pages: Welcome, About Me, Photos, Movie, Blog and Podcast. I don't see one for "Download My Crappy AppleScript That I Threw Together In Five Minutes", which is pretty much all that my site contains right now.

All that said, I really do like the image reflections effect.

Other interesting iLife 06 fact: You can subscribe to Flickr RSS (and, indeed, Atom) feeds in iPhoto 6. Rock.

i actually think i'll use it to do a page for Cheryl. It's not bad. Biggest frustration so far is that I can't figure out how to change some of the template elements. I have a feeling I'll have to edit the actual html of the template by hand.

Yeah, if I wanted to put up a site that had the kinds of content for which iWeb has templates, I'd be all over it. I think the fact that I'm using MediaWiki for my website already puts me out in the lunatic fringe :-)

Sounds interesting. RSS feeds in iPhoto might actually give me a good reason to use it, and I could use a WYSIWYG HTML editor.

iWeb looks interesting. But I have to wonder what the guys from Karelia software thought of this announcement with Sandvox and everything. I think Sandvox looks better but there will be a lot of people who have iWeb. Even if they upgrade their iLife mainly for the new GarageBand, iPhoto and iDVD.

They do support publishing methods besides .Mac though which is nice. What is Apple doing with .Mac anyway? They seem to keep finding ways to hook it into every single one of their products. You cannot escape .Mac!

Nothing to wonder. It's all on their site on their weblog. They were surprised, unpleasantly, and they are a little bit snarky about it. Understandable.

To be fair, you can publish iWeb pages to other that .Mac, you just save the pages to a folder and use whatever app you want to upload them. You do give up the fancy AJAX slideshows though. I'm unsure why, maybe there are some server side scripts working some of the magic.

Two words: recurring revenue. :)

I did notice the little "there's more to life than iLife" thing on Karelia's main page. It looks like they have a very nice product but I've yet to use it. I'm glad that you can still save iWeb sites to a folder and then publish them elsewhere, that would have been dumb to lock in to .Mac exclusively.

I can see the value in being able to transparently publish to the web from your desktop with the way that Apple has tied everything into .Mac. But I still have a soft spot for choice. I'm just worried that one day, I will succumb to the allure of .Mac and shell out $99 for it. They keep enticing me! lol.

Recurring revenue is definitely a good thing because that means they can keep making awesome products. Even if they have somewhat dumb sounding names like MacBook.

iWeb was very heavily trailed by the rumour sites, so Sandvox surely knew what was coming.

Yeah. I hadn't really heard what was floating around besides the rumors of Intel Macs and perhaps a new variation of the mini. I'm not sure how much iWeb will hurt Sandvox. Sandvox sort of seems like "iWeb Pro." All I know is they have to be a little pissed.

They were already a verb when it came to getting screwed over by Apple (Sherlocked) so for this to happen to the same software company yet again must suck. I wonder what other software Apple's working on that is eerily similar to (and likely to knock-out) a preexisting solution.

I've never put up a site in my life...Even the easy-to-use WYSIWYG editors always sucked somehow. Maybe I'll actually get off my butt and have a web presence with iWeb? :)

is it true that - finally - you can keep your photographs somewhere other than iPhoto's vile directory structure? Ours all live on a fileserver, so they are part of the backup routine.

Why doesn't Apple fix that anyway? What do we possibly have to gain by using that weird file structure. It should be like iTunes or something.

I dunno, I've never really understood why people are so vehemently against the iPhoto Library. I sort of think of iPhoto as the "Finder window for photographs" and I'm pretty happy with it.

I don't mind iPhoto handling its library file/folder storage details automatically and the app itself works fine for my modest image management requirements. I prefer not relying on filesystem file/folder hierarchies as a primary method for organizing images. Nor do I care (much) about traditional filesystem navigation (using Finder, et.al.).

Ideally I'd like to continue having iPhoto automatically organize the library yet not be held hostage by it. I've tinkered a bit with Finder Smart Folders to get a different external views of iPhoto's internal hierarchy. It would be useful for iPhoto albums and other library metadata to be available in other apps (including Finder), similar to but more flexible than the Photos media browser in iMovie.

I hope there are improvements in resolving conflicts between "Finder-centric" and "iPhoto-centric" metaphors for organizing images so they can be more easily accessed and shared using different apps.

Doesn't iTunes also built it's own weird file structure? Although it'd be nice to be able to point it at extra directories, much like CD-ROMs work.

iTunes will either leave your music folder the way you have it structured or it will arrange the files into Artist > Album folders. Which is much easier to navigate via the finder. iPhoto at least makes folders for each year but when you go inside of those you're presented with folders with numbers. Now if I knew what those numbers corresponded to, it would probably make more sense. It would be nice if it was something like 2005 > February > 14 or something, even though most people don't take photos every day, this would be easy to navigate.

Will it leave it? I haven't figured out how to do this, myself (but then, I've only got my Powerbook for two months or so now). I had a folder with all my music, I told it to import it, and it copied it all over to it's own folder. Can I just put my music in that folder haphazardly and it will recognize it?

And the folders in iPhoto are organized exactly like you say, except it's "02" instead of "February". I know my month's numbers, so I'm fine. :-)

0_0....I stand corrected. I had never previously got past the fact that they were numbers to discover that they were the month and day. Now, it's not so bad. :-)

As for iTunes, go into it's preferences under Advanced & select or deselect "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" and "Keep iTunes Music folder organized." Turning them both off will allow you to keep you music wherever you want arranged anyway you want. Turning them both on will make sure all your music is in one place and organized by Artist and Album. I currently have my Music Library on my second partition of my external drive. You have to add files in through iTunes though for it to do anything. It will ignore files you drop in with the finder.

I figure using "February" might have been annoying, internationalization-wise. I'm more interested in a full-screen mode and improved performance out of my iPhoto, and I'm wondering whether it's worth upgrading...

I'll try out the iTunes tips you just gave me soon, thanks!

I can see where that would be an issue from a localization perspective. With the all the new features to iDVD, iPhoto, GarageBand and the addition of iWeb--It's definitely an tempting purchase.
